The International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) released a position stand on the effects of energy drink or energy shot “consumption on acute exercise performance, metabolism, and cognition, along with synergistic exercise-related performance outcomes and training adaptations.” The authors offered a review of key ingredients, acute exercise performance, force and power production, muscular endurance, anaerobic capacity, aerobic exercise, metabolic effects/fuel utilization, cognitive effects, reaction time, subjective effects, sport-specific performance, sex differences, continued use and long-term adaptations, and safety considerations. The authors also provided 9 tables to summarize the literature. They end the document with a list of 13 conclusions.
