The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
(AND), Dietitians of Canada (DC), and American College of Sports Medicine
(ACSM) have released a position statement about nutrition and athletic
performance. The organizations agreed “that the performance of, and recovery
from, sporting activities are enhanced by well-chosen nutrition strategies.
These organizations provide guidelines for the appropriate type, amount and
timing of intake of food, fluids and dietary supplements to promote optimal
health and sport performance across different scenarios of training and
competitive sport.” The main sections of the document are New Perspectives in
Sports Nutrition (11 points), Nutrition for Athlete Preparation, Performance
Nutrition: Strategies to Optimize Performance and Recovery for Competition and
Key Training Sessions, Special Populations and Environments, Roles and
Responsibilities of the Sports Dietitian, and Summary.
