The
International Society of Sports Nutrition released a position statement
regarding energy drinks in sports. The purpose of this statement was to
“critically evaluate the scientific literature and make recommendations in
regards to the role that ED [energy drinks] and/or ES [energy shots] may have
on exercise performance and energy expenditure/metabolism. Additionally, we
will discuss safety considerations in regards to the use of ED and/or ES.” The
statement ends with 9 conclusions and recommendations but also offers a
comprehensive review on the topic; including ergogenic/performance
considerations, influence of taking these drinks prior to physical activity,
role in weight loss, and safety considerations.
