The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine convened an expert panel in July 2021 to address the evidence, knowledge gaps, and recommendations surrounding the COVID vaccination in athletes. Their goal is “to provide clinicians with suggestions on how to incorporate the COVID vaccination during the preparticipation physical examination for athletes in all levels of training and competition.” The document discusses the importance of vaccination for athletes, types of vaccines, dosing and timing, advice to athletes, and considerations for specific populations (e.g., youth athletes, pregnant athletes), reactions to the vaccines, and overcoming vaccine hesitance among athletes and the sports community, and post-vaccine recommendations for athletes.
