“The American Medical
Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) formed a task force to address the current
evidence and knowledge gaps regarding preparticipation CV screening in athletes
from the perspective of a primary care sports medicine physician.” The document
includes a 17 point executive summary and discusses the incidence of sudden
cardiac arrest and death in young athletes, prevalence of disorders associated
with sudden cardiac death, history and physical examination for the
cardiovascular screening of athletes, electrocardiogram for the cardiovascular
screening of athletes, outcomes for early detection of cardiovascular disease,
physician resources and infrastructure, recommendations, and future research
directions.
