The International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) released 10 recommendations for the use of sodium bicarbonate as an ergogenic aid and suggested key topics for future research on sodium bicarbonate supplementation. The authors discuss the 1) history of research on sodium bicarbonate and exercise, 2) mechanisms of absorption, 3) effects on high-intensity exercise performance, 4) effects on resistance exercise performance, 5) effects on training adaptations, 6) sex-specific effects on performance, 7) optimal protocols for supplementation (e.g., dose, timing), and 8) interactions with other ergogenic aids.
